Hands On Learning

DISCOVERY CLASSES 

On-site – At High Desert Museum
Discovery Classes$175 for a 90-minute program. The fee includes admission to the Museum for teachers, up to 30 students and one chaperone for every fivestudents (required).

Museum memberships and/or passes may not be used for any part of a school group admission. Multiple programs may be booked during a visit.

Off-site – At Your Facility
$200 for a 90-minute program. Maximum of 30 students per program. Excess mileage fees may apply for facilities outside of Bend.

 


Meets EARTH SCIENCE benchmarks for K-6th grade. Choose from the following:

Rockin’ Geology
Using the scientific method, students will test their own ideas about rocks to discover the various minerals and rocks that are created through the volcanic process.

What’s The Matter?
Liquid, solid, and gas are the three types of matter that your students will test through inquiry and some messy experimentation. How does matter transform? What is it? Through trial and error, let’s find out together.

 


Meets LIFE SCIENCES benchmarks for K-6th grade. Choose from the following:

Reptiles
Get up close and personal with these desert dwellers as your class digs up the importance of our cold-blooded friends.

Birds of Prey
Hunters of the sky have unique ways of catching, eating, and digesting their prey. We’ll look inside an owl pellet and meet a raptor while your students learn about these winged wonders.

Desert Dwellers
Deserts are filled with life! Students become field biologists and explore diverse microhabitats to determine how High Desert animals have adapted to the environment.

Creepy Crawlies
Enter the amazing world of insects and arachnids! The students will classify arthropodsby observing insect collections and live animals.

 


3rd-6th grade. Choose from the following:

Art Through Ancestry
Using precious Native American items from the past as inspiration, your students can learn to create new art pieces from a variety of materials such as clay, plant materials, and animal skins.

Traveling the Applegate Trail
Discover this unique section of the famous passage to the West through the study of artifacts, journals, music and maps. Problemsolving activities allow students to find out if their party survives.

Living Off the Land
Native people understood the seasons and the science of living off the land. Your students can test their survival skills as well as create their own artistic tools through this hands-on class.
