Works of widely recognized
Native American artists’ interpretations of Museum
artifacts
Through February 21, 2010
Art Through Ancestry features the
work of three widely recognized Native American artists’
interpretations of Museum artifacts, with video of the artistic
process and artist interviews. The artists are:
Lillian Pitt
An internationally recognized artist known for sculpture,
carvings, masks, glass works, wearable art and works on paper.
She taps ancient ancestral stories for works related to caring
for the environment.
Rick Bartow
His works are inspired by transformation mythology.
Bartow, of the Wiyot tribe of Northern California, said,
“I can draw anything from my shoes to the side of your
head, but what can I draw that's going to make a difference?
That's what I'm looking for.”
Pat Courtney
Gold
Her internationally recognized basketry, influenced
by her Wasco heritage, also includes cattail leaves, tule,
dogbane fiber, cedar bark, tree roots, chenille, and dyed
wool.
